Hayward created her as a form of camouflage whilst working for the Greater Glottage Police Force. He initially attributes it to theatrics, before confessing that sometimes things take on a life of their own.[1]

Chapter 14: And In Ruined Flesh Ascend Hayward speaks compelling about his wife and their relationship. He says its a difficult thing for someone to truly understand you.
Chapter 27: So I'll Bear It Trembling Onwards Paige asks if Hayward is wearing a wedding band. He asks her if she thought he was married. She said he thought he was maybe divorced. He tells her it was a family heirloom and belonged to his mother. He wore it as camouflage back in the Greater Glottage Police Force. He says sometimes things take on a life of their own. He throws the band into the water.
